SexyBookmarks Plugin Upgrade

sexybookmarksOne of my monthly tasks is to update my plugins to the latest versions (after checking the updated version still works with the version of WordPress I am using).

This month, I noticed that when I updated the SexyBookmarks plugin, it needed to be reconfigured. The following notice was displayed at the top of my dashboard. I’m sure it was never displayed when I upgraded before.

The upgrade is easy to re-configure. Click on the link, ‘Plugin Options Page’ you’ll see at the top of your dashboard after upgrading.

You then are provided with a list of options.

You need to pick which social icons you’d like to display. You can pick ‘All’, ‘None’ (and then add them manually by checking each box) or ‘Most Popular’.

I like to click ‘None’ and then pick my own.

sexybookmarks

These are the ones I have chosen. Are they the best ones?

sexybookmarksI would love to include StumbleUpon but my site is banned by StumbleUpon. I have written to them many times but they refuse to ‘un-ban’ me. Once banned, no matter what the reason, they never un-ban you!

This part is crucial. You can now add how your ‘tweet’ will be written when someone clicks the Twitter icon.

You can see I have said I want my ‘tweets’ to be written like this:

RT @andrewrondeau ${title} – ${short_link} #blogging

${title} is the blog title.

${short_link} is the short link that is created. I use the bit.ly link shortener.

Plus I use ‘#blogging’ which means if people search for the term ‘blogging’ within Twitter, my ‘tweets’ will be displayed in the search results.

Choose your background image. I use the ‘Sharing is Caring’ one.

I leave all other options as the default settings.

Click the ‘Save changes’ button and you’ve finished.

This is my favorite sharing plugin. It conflicts with the least other plugins and lets you choose whatever you want to show. Fabulous!

Yeah, that update is waiting for me too. Last time, it wiped out all my icons and settings so I’ve been putting it off but probably time to get current.

      Mike,

I think it is worth the effort – remember your current settings first!

Oh, neat. That’s a nice addition to SexyBookmarks. I only wish they didn’t make you re-click all the check-boxes every update. It’s especially frustrating when you have SBs plugin on several different blogs..

Yeah I agree. Really don’t know why it can’t remember your current settings.

We had to dump everyone’s settings with the v3.2 series due to a change in the naming system of the bookmarks. We’re attempting to get rid of the word “sexy” behind the scenes in order to make the plugin more usable for people in countries which filter/restrict the internet.

          Hi Josh

Thanks for coming across and commenting.

Does that mean in future upgrades, our changes will be saved?

          Thanks.

Funny thing is that I have been thinking we need some social bookmarks on our blog entries. Last time you wrote about something we needed, a contact form, we ended up with a contact form. I’ll check this plugin out for sure.

I wonder if there is a product like this plugin available for a static web page. We need social bookmark options on static pages as well.

I found this – you have to buy it and it is for Dreamweaver:

          http://www.topdreamweaverextensions.com/social-bookmarks

Only other option is to hard code, I suppose.

Thanks Andy, We use Dreamweaver quite a bit, so the recommendation is perfect. We’ve been redesigning our site and it should go live today or tomorrow. Getting some sort of feature for folks to bookmark pages is a top priority.

We’re currently working on a universal solution that will work on any publishing platform as well as static sites… Stay tuned!

Nope. Look at it, they’re like half icons; I’m assuming that’s where the “sexy’ comes from.

I am using the Bookmark Me plugin of WP but looks like I might try this as replacement. The lack of options for Bookmark Me is one thing I don’t like. Can the icons of SexyBookMarks be adjusted so they are smaller? Would be excellent if it can be adjusted.

This is a plugin for sharing love someone. I just wish they did not make you click all the boxes checked all the updates. is a good supplement to SexyBookmarks. It’s frustrating especially When you have SBS different plugin on several blogs .

  8. Elizabeth October 14, 2010 at 9:20 am #

I may be dense, but every test shows the Tweets going up as “Quantum Quotes” and short link. (on my blog). That’s not the title of my blog or the posts I was testing.

I would like the configuration to show Title, then Excerpt/Summary, then Short Link. I can’t find how to do that.

Sometimes I might just title it Do or Don’t. I’d like an excerpt of the essay/post in the tweet config. Any way to do that?

I must have done something wrong, since everything is titled Quantum Quotes. Hmmmmm.

THANKS for a great plug-in. Love the interface and the way it stands out on the blog posts. Have used before with better luck, I’m just dense I guess.

    • Andrew October 14, 2010 at 1:52 pm #

      Elizabeth,

You need to set up the configuration like this:

      RT ${title} – ${short_link} @yourtwitter account

      Andrew

      • Elizabeth October 22, 2010 at 8:17 pm #

Hey, thanks for responding, that is perfect – I even understand now. We love this plug-in, and will be contributing if you have area for that. 🙂

  9. Markus Jalmerot November 2, 2010 at 10:38 pm #

One of my favorite plugins. Thanks for the update.

  10. Stephen R November 12, 2010 at 4:30 pm #

I love the plugin but one of the things that concerns me is that for some reason google bots index this plugin’s directories. I’ve not figured out why and my robots.txt file is set to disallow indexing of my plugins but it’s still happening and yes, I’ve even put a a disallow in there for sexybookmarks. Anybody else ever notice this? Otherswise, I really like this plugin. It’s the best.
