I always recommend you go for a premium theme like Flexx, Thesis, Headway or Woo Themes…as they are much easier to set-up and change.

However I also understand that some people don’t want to part with their money and prefer free themes.

So…

Here are some great free wordpress theme articles that I have researched and collated together to help you in your search.

So, enjoy this collection. I hope you’ll find one that you really like.

most people will not like to part with the money for getting a premium template for their wordpress blogs. but it is a fact that every professional bloggers have their template designed for them, either a premium template or a custom made one. so start with a free template first. then move on to a premium one.

That is exactly what I did – start with a free one. I did move over to the Flexx theme within days though.

The free one I was using was just so restrictive.

A definite resource Andrew, thanks. 🙂

I must ask though, have you personally used at least one theme each out of – – Flexx, Thesis, Headway or Woo Themes?

    • Andrew January 16, 2011 at 5:51 pm #

      Dennis,

I have personally used all 4.

    Hi Andrew

I have Headway theme and when I saw one of my experienced blogger friends site (he uses Headway too) I realised there was much more scope than I ever imagined.

Of course he is a geek so knows code etc. But I got a techie friend who is now changing things on my site for me. Really generous and I think she is enjoying it. Gotta love this community 🙂

Headway is a great theme – especially the latest release.

Great to hear you have found someone to do the work for you.

And people say that free themes aren’t cool.

Although for those that don’t really know html and css it may seem restrictive and it’s recommended they use premium themes that offer more customization from the administration panel, but for people that have some skills with html and css and some knowledge of php can use a free theme and do all the things that a premium one can.

But, for starters this themes can easily keep their own until the blogger can buy a premium one, so I bet a lot of starting bloggers will thank you, Andrew!

      Alex,

I quickly moved from a free theme to a premium one but that was a few years ago now. The free ones are getting better and some look really good.

Great list. Choosing a theme for a new WordPress site is one of the hardest and time-consuming steps for me. I’ll check into these! I might as well look at the free options before going to the paid ones 🙂

    Thanks for the list!

I am looking for the best free seo wordpress theme. Hopefully Google can give me a good result. I am running two sets of sites that are almost identical but they have different themes. One set produces all the income while the other lags behind significantly.

      Steve

Are both themes you are using, free?

I was running Small Business SEO v1.0.3 and Cordobo Green Park 2 0.9.502. The Small Business SEO theme was making all the money.

Yesterday I changed from Cordobo Green Park to Elements of SEO 1.4 in hopes of getting equal results.

        Steve,

Thanks for sharing the links Andrew. SmashingMagazine’s collection my favorite. they always have good “list” posts.

Some of these free themes are much nicer than even premium themes 9at least in my opinion). And I have to say, thats very nice of developers to offer them for free. yeah, I knwo they get backlinks every time someone installs their time, but still its very kind of them.
