Alexa Ranking – How To Increase Yours

Alexa_RankingThere are differing opinions regarding the use and importance of Alexa ranking. Some say that it’s useless, others say it is important.

There are many pros and cons.

Back in February when my blog was one year old my Alexa ranking was 52,753.

Today it is 41,997.

I like to monitor my ranking as it is an indication of the amount of traffic your site is getting.

So, for those who still consider Alexa, here are some helpful articles from big and small bloggers alike who share their ideas about Alexa rankings and how to increase it.

As I understand it, Alexa rank comes only from users of the Alexa toolbar. It can be a good indicator of traffic, but I have several blogs. One gets five times as much traffic as the next highest-traffic blog, yet has a similar Alexa rank.

That’s right John – as I say it is only an indication. Irrespective of the actual number, as long at the ranking steadily decreases then you know you are getting more Alexa traffic.

Useful list Andrew. I do think Alexa is important but I am not sure whether I would focus that much on increasing my rank. I think if you focus on building relationships and creating content then your alexa rank will naturally increase.

      Julius

That is true – relationships are key.

Just thought some people would like to try – I added the Alexa Ranking ‘box’ on my site as per Yaro’s suggestion just to see if it does make any difference.

Alexa Ranking is one of the best tool for bloggers and webmasters to take SELF SATISFACTION @ which has no value either in traffic or get Google SERP !

Great tips thanks so much Andrew. I haven’t really looked much into Alexa Rankings…I know it is a good indicator and all. Just focused more on Google Analytics, traffic sources, etc. What is the biggest thing you get out of Alexa? Congrats on moving up to PR4 in the last update by the way!

The only thing I get from Alexa is the indication that ‘traffic’ is going in the right direction.

Thanks for the ‘thanks’ re: PR4.

Sometimes it’s really complicated for us to improve the Alexa Ranking as it counts only people who installed the Alexa toolbar, sometimes our blog traffic is huge, but the Alexa ranking is remained the same. What we can do is just driving more traffic to the site, and just let the Alexa ranking grows itself.

I’ve tried several tips to improve my Alexa Ranking, it improved until 40k+ and it drops to 50k+ right now, but honestly my blog traffic drops a bit due to less updating as I’m busy with my examination right now. 🙂

Anyway, good sharing Andrew with all the useful link!

    Nice, Andrew!

I have been working on lowering my Alexa rank with the assistance of some of the tools you mention in the backlinks post.

Ultimately, I’m working on my google rank… but Alexa gives me something easier to feel good about as I walk the long road to page 1 in google.

I’m curious… do you do anything to ping or update when you use backlink tools so that you get the ‘credit’ for them immediately?

    keep smiling,

      Ben,

I do a few things. Based upon my blog post: https://www.webuildyourblog.com/2121/build-backlinks-11-methods/

After my comment has been approved on a blog site, I always tweet and social bookmark the blog post. I don’t get any real benefit other than someone might see my comment and visit my site.

Re: Article Directories. Again, you can tweet and social bookmark whenever you add an article to an article directory.

I also add my article directory accounts RSS feeds to the RSS directories. That way they get a link back as well.

Same thing with HubPages – get then tweeted and social bookmarker – get a few blogger friends to help out as well.

      Does that help?

All great suggestions. Another method of improving Alexa rank is to write about the topics that people are searching Alexa for. If you have the Alexa toolbar installed then you will see current trends (similar to Google trends) if any of these fit your niche, write about them asap so that you can attract Alexa toolbar users to your site.

    • Andrew August 12, 2010 at 9:20 am #

  12. William K Wallace September 6, 2010 at 11:20 am #

Over the past couple of weeks my Alexa rank has started to slide a bit, which is weird because the amount of visitors and page views I have been getting has increased and my bounce rate has also improved. The only change I made was deleting the commentluv widget, which I have now reinstalled.

    • Andrew September 7, 2010 at 11:20 am #

      William,

The Alexa rank is only a guide. It only improves if your visitors have the Alexa toolbar installed.

So you may have more visitors and an improve bounce rate – but they may not have the Alexa toolbar installed.

      Andrew

      • Neil May 23, 2011 at 11:58 am #

I think it is definitely worth knowing what your Alexa ranking is because whilst it might not be completely accurate in absolute terms, if you keep an eye on it you can tell what the trend is with your website, which after all is even more important. You can also get whole heaps of information such as the demographics of your visitors which again can be very useful. So overall I think it is an excellent resource.

        • Andrew May 23, 2011 at 2:18 pm #

          Neil,

It is worth knowing but not in isolation…as you say. Use it but also gather other stats as well.

    • Andrew January 11, 2011 at 7:02 pm #

      kevin,

Adding the alexa widget does improve your ranking.

I decided to remove the widget from here as it was slowing down the load speed of the blog.

      Andrew

  15. DJ Trinity June 23, 2011 at 10:24 am #

My blog’s Alexa rank was affected when I removed the Alexa Sparky extension for Firefox. I did it because I installed another extension that included a PR checker. I didn’t know that it would make my rankings suffer. I’ve reinstalled the Alexa Sparky plugin and I hope that my Alexa ranking would go “down” again.

I guess the visitors of the website are who improve the page rank !! we can’t assume that we can get it better because the visitor must install the Alexa toolbar.

In fact, Alexa wants to count the high quality visitor, as what they see is that people who install there toolbar are the quality ones.

Great Post About Alexa, thanks for it.

Btw, nice blog. Enjoyed reading your posts. I’m adding you to my blogroll if you don’t mind. 🙂

  16. nik July 1, 2011 at 9:34 am #

I think nowadays having good Alexa rank doesn’t matter at all. Moreover Alexa gathers traffic from users who have installed Alexa tool bar. Many people may not have installed Alexa toolbar. Having good Alexa rank may not mean that the site is having good traffic.

    • Andrew July 5, 2011 at 11:57 am #

      Nik,

Alexa ranking is just one indication. I agree you should also be using other stats as well.

  17. Dr. George Carothers August 2, 2011 at 4:47 pm #

Alexa ranking is by all means worth following. It helps both the site owner and advertisers view your website’s potential, in terms of marketing. The higher your site’s ranking, the higher the bid may be to buy advertising space from your site.

    Hi Andrew,

thanks for sharing these valuable resources.

Indeed Alexa ranking is useful if you want to make money online selling text links or ads :
many companies value your site depending on your Alexa rank.

    More traffic=higher Alexa rank…

    it seems so easy…!

    Best wishes

I understand that Alexa collects information from users who have installed Alexa tool bar. But many websites speaks about adding the Alexa badge to your website.

Any idea if adding the Alexa badge to website will improve the ALexa ranking?

    Thanks, good article.

Andrew i think that some times Alexa rankings are 100% correct but some times it looks totally wrong. I have personal experience of this and i checked this on my two blogs.

    • Andrew June 1, 2012 at 1:02 am #

      Zeeshan

I agree – I’m not sure it is totally accurate. A bit link Google Analytics – not sure if that is 100% true!

      Andrew

    • Michael Kluge July 14, 2012 at 10:19 pm #

@Zeesha Yes I very much agree with you, some blogs I also don’t get the alexa rank and diminution, this is very sad, if I have to do I really don’t like spam with spam, and spam is not wise.

@Andrew but what may make I will try your way. thanks anyway. 😀

Yes, Yaro Staraks post is pretty good….I did a few of the things he mentioned and the Alexa ranking is tumbling…still a fair way to go. You could also try commenting on blogs that talk about the Alexa ranking too. They are more likely to have the the toolbar installed and may click through to your site thus improving your ranking…

  26. Christianstt June 25, 2012 at 11:21 am #

I’ll certainly try a few of the things mentioned although I don’t highly regard Alexa’s ranking system

I can say as per my blogging experience, there is not need any extra exercise for improving your website alexa rank. You need just unique and rich content. I get alexa rank nearest 7 lakh in just 2 months. I have not done any thing extra for my alexa rank. It is jumping everyday

  29. Brittany C. August 28, 2012 at 12:26 pm #

Any reason why one would jump from 100,000 to 300,000? I am trying to make some improvements but didn’t do anything that different to make it get so low. At least it’s pushing me to produce more quality content, right?! Thanks for the post.

  30. Rohith VR September 12, 2012 at 1:36 am #

I never knew that Alexa got their information from the Alexa toolbar… That means I could be getting a ton of views, but if nobody was using the Alexa toolbar when they viewed my site, my rating would be bad.

Great collection of linked posts(articles) on improving Alexa ranking, Andrew.

There are a lot of mixed opinions as to just how important Alexa ranking really is…

Some people say it is not very accurate, and so we shouldn’t be too concerned with it….on the other hand, many people have stated that a healthy Alexa Ranking is a sign of a blog(website)s level of success…

Also, that a low(good) Alexa ranking is a way to attract Advertisers to a site….

Either way, many of us develop the habit of constantly monitoring our Alexa ranking and hoping for some improvement…so we obviously believe it has merit….
