This is an extra blog post in the ‘how to make a blog’ post series. I hope you think it is worth your time!
Fact 1: Every blog post you write should NOT be optimized for SEO purposes.
Why?
Because sometimes you just want to share some news or write from your heart or write about something you did last week and has nothing to do with the niche of your blog
Fact 2: Some of the blog posts you publish MUST be optimized for SEO purposes.
Why?
Because you want free targeted visitors and the way to get free targeted visitors is to ensure you optimize your blog posts for the search engines. See my previous post in this ‘how to make a blog’ series:
How To Make A Blog Part Eight: Perfect Your SEO Habits
Fact 3: This blog post (i.e. the one you are reading now) is about those posts you want to optimize for the search engines
Why am I sharing this knowledge?
I see too many bloggers who THINK they are optimizing their posts for the search engines and they are not.
I also see many blog owners who don’t optimize some of their blog posts for the search engines and they should!
So…let’s start and oh…before I forget there is a free PDF document below (no opt-in required) that you can download and use.
The free PDF is a simple checklist for publishing blog posts for best SEO results. You can print it off and refer to it each time you publish a post.
Sorry…one more thing (I feel like Detective Colombo!)…I have assumed you have chosen the keyword phrase you want to target in your blog post.
This could cause a few arguments but these are the SEO steps in (my) order of importance:
SEO Boost 1:
Ensure your targeted keyword phrase is part of the blog posts URL.
SEO Boost 2:
Use your targeted keyword phrase in the title of your blog post (towards the beginning, if you can) and ensure the title is less than 70 characters.
SEO Boost 3:
Use a SEO plugin like the All-in-one-seo-pack or WordPress SEO and add your targeted keyword phrase within the “Meta Description”. Ensure your Meta Description is less than 156 characters.
SEO Boost 4:
Aim for a keyword phrase density of between 1% and 5%. If your post is 500 words in length, your keyword phrase needs to be mentioned between 5 and 25 times. If 1000 words, then between 10 and 50 times and so on.
SEO Boost 5:
Break up your text with sub headings and use the H2 and H3 tags. Use your targeted keyword phrase in the sub-headings.
SEO Boost 6:
Link from your blog posts to relevant internal (i.e. your blog posts) and external blog posts using appropriate anchor text.
SEO Boost 7:
Ensure your blog post is at least 300 words in length.
SEO Boost 8:
Use your keyword phrase in the first and last sentences.
SEO Boost 9:
Add the post to ONE category that is a keyword related to your targeted keyword.
SEO Boost 10:
Add an image and ensure the image is called ’your targeted keyword’ phrase’.
Plus add a title and ‘alt’ title of your targeted keyword phrase. The plugin SEO Friendly Images automatically does this for you.
SEO Boost 11:
Use a SEO plugin like the All-in-one-seo-pack or WordPress SEO and add your targeted keyword phrase within the “Meta Keywords”
SEO Boost 12:
Bold your keyword phrase a couple of times.
That’s it…12 steps to maximize the SEO of your posts.

You can download the free SEO checklist document here (no opt-in required).

I happened to stumble upon Andrew's website (WeBuildYourBlog.com) while searching for blogging services that would help me start my very own blog. I was a total newbie when it came to the blogging world. Fast forward 3 months and not only do I have my own awesome blog, but friends and family are actually asking me how to start their own blog and I am able to set their blogs up for them! In only 3 months under Andrew's guidance I went from total newbie to being sought after. Thanks Andrew!
I was impressed with the excellent service.
The end result is a fantastic site that is attracting a lot more attention and visitors than my old one.
I wanted a stylish website that presented my original abstract art in a visually attractive way. Andrew came highly recommended to me as a "no nonsense" practitioner. He does exactly what he says he will do: I give him the parameters to work within and he provides a quick and precise service. You will receive nothing but the best from Andrew!
Andrew is highly knowledgeable about blogs and very customer service focused. I knew nothing about blogs and Andrew was very kind, patient, pleasant to work with, receptive and responsive. Work was delivered in timely manner and if I need anything done for blog again I would use Andrew. If you are looking for quality work, excellent customer service and someone that really gets YOU and your needs, I recommend Andrew!.
I've spent insane amounts of money in the past with former webmasters until I discovered Andrew Rondeau.
Thank you Andrew for your patience in getting my website and on-line courses on-line and selling. You were fantastic in learning the delivery platform software that I had chosen and you were across the complexities quickly. Your detailed approach in setting guidelines and deliverables bought my focus back to where it should be and got the job done. Thank you for all your efforts it was a pleasure.
Andrew is an asset to our ongoing website and social media needs. He responds quickly, accurately, and cost effectively. Andrew plays a consultative role in many aspects to our online needs.
I am very happy to provide a testimonial for Andrew Rondeau. All the parts of the process of working with Andrew were a pleasure. He clarified what I was wanting and he delivered it without fuss. He was courteous and prompt in all his dealings with me. I have no hesitation in recommending Andrew to anyone who wants work done on their blog.
I was introduced to Andrew by a dear friend Corinne Edwards and Andrew as transformed by blog in ways that have reaped results. My membership has gone up and my blog always looks clean and easy to read. Whenever I send Andrew a request to check out - it's ALWAYS prompt and easy to understand. In my humble opinion he is the BEST when it comes to knowledge of the blogging world.
I first connected with Andrew in early 2010 as I was looking to start a blog. I didn't do anything straight away as I could not decide what subject to write about. Every so often I contacted him with ideas and found him very honest and helpful. He gave me some great advice and I found him very inspiring because he makes you sit down and think about what it is you really want to do and whether it can work for you online. He gives you all the time you need and you never feel you are taking up too much of his time.
Having worked with Andrew on and off over the last year, I have found him to be very patient, helpful and easy to work with. He is also very knowledgeable, supportive and a true expert.
Andrew is the real deal and he knows his stuff! His customer service is superb and he gets your work done FAST! You won't need to wait around for endless weeks to see results. Most importantly he works on the site as if it's his own, thus you are assured that you will get the best quality service. I now give Andrew all of my new and old sites to work on. Trust me; you cannot go wrong with this gentleman!
Without Andrew, I wouldn't even have a blog -- I would still just be sitting here, staring at my computer, feeling confused and helpless. With Andrew, I no longer fear confusion and it's impossible to feel helpless. He exerts any and all necessary efforts to resolve any problem or perplexity -- quickly, kindly, intelligently, up to and including IM exchanges in real time via skype. I would urge anyone at any level of expertise (or not) to make the most of his extraordinary talent.
Andrew was kind enough to offer up his own time as part of an initiative to make the world a better place, and I was one of the beneficiaries of that effort. He spent an hour with me working on improving my bounce rate; he suggested several helpful strategies. Most importantly, he helped me with some key processes to help speed up my site, which had bogged down considerably with overuse of graphics. Andrew helped me get set up with Rackspace, which helped so much. From a load time of almost 30 seconds, the site sped up to about a 6 second load. Thanks so much, Andrew!
The best blog builder, and the best blog maintenance, I've ever met is Andrew Rondeau. This fellow is an authentic professional in every sense of the word. He's lightning fast, knowledgeable, competent, a skilled listener. He goes the extra mile. He's able to share his passion for his work and products without being pushy. He as other great internet skills, too, but his most impressive attribute is mastery of website building.
I have been online since 1996 and in that time I have been involved in the development of almost 400 web sites for my clients. I have worked with a wide variety of vendors and I have to tell you that Andrew @ We Build Your Blog has far exceeded my expectations. In addition to his vast knowledge and expertise, he is a genuinely great guy, who always goes the extra mile. I highly recommend him, in fact I only recommend him now for web development.
Andrew is highly knowledgeable about blogs, and you can get your blog up and running successfully and fast. Andrew has helped me immeasurably with my blog and he is patient and good natured and a wonderful teacher.
I approached Andrew in February 2010, because I needed to enhance the way I communicated my business.
Andrew has extensive knowledge about internet marketing, SEO and building web sites/blogs. His course explained everything in an easy to understand way and I now have a web site that is generating me new clients and producing income from internet product sales.
Hi, Andrew Rondeau here and this blog, my blog, will not lie to you. I will give it to you straight. This blog is about blogging, the Internet and sharing my experiences and advice on

Andrew,
Spot on. I first started SEOing my posts about 5 ears ago. Before that I just posted what I thougt people would want to read about, without doing any SEO. Aother very important step is actually checking keywords for traffic first. That’s very important also.
You can post about the exact same topic, but vary your keyword phrase slightly and pick up significant traffic, just because that term gets many more searches.
If you optimize for it, chances are you’ll be well ranked for that phrase. If t gets 1500 searches daily, you’ll obviously receive much more traffic than if you ranked just as well for a phrase that only gets 150 searches daily.

You mention a great point about keyword research. I discuss that in part 2 of this ‘how to make a blog’ series.

Dear Andrew -
I too printed it out. It is pasted on my wall next to my computer.
Curious -
Why only 70 characters in the title?

Thanks for downloading and printing.
Re: 70 characters.
Because that’s the maximum Google uses to display the title in their search pages.
If you have more than 70 characters, the title is cut off.

Very handy list now that I’m starting to looking into optimizing my posts. I didn’t know about limiting the title 70 characters. Can it be longer than that as long as the target keywords are in the first 70 characters?

Bryan,
The title can be longer than that but see my response to Corinne above and yes the keywords have to be in the first 70 characters – towards the beginning if you can.

Great checklist. It also helps if you optimize old posts after seeing what long tail keywords are bringing in traffic. Then you optimize your post for those specific long tail keywords and it will really post your traffic to those posts.

A great list for those looking to optimize their sites. As I’ve said many times SEO is all about opinions and I don’t believe 11 or 12 are of any use at all. 11 may work for tiny search engines but all the major ones ignore meta keywords (in fact WordPress SEO doesn’t even have a box for it unless you tell it to in the options).
#12 I don’t think has every been proved (how could it) but then I guess it doesn’t hurt.
The other tips are gold though!

Good points raised – I did say in priority order!
Some ‘related posts’ plugins use the words you use in the tags – so it is worth adding.
