WordPress 3.0: Do NOT Upgrade

WordPress 3.0 is here and ready for general release. I must agree there are some great improvements. A simple one like bulk updates so you can upgrade 15 plugins at once with a single click.

But I’m not upgrading just yet.

There are bound to be a number of bugs and issues – so I’m going to wait until 3.01 or 3.1: the release which sorts out the bugs.

You upgrading now?

  1. I usually update one (and only one) of my own sites first, and then only after a backup so I can revert back. After the small issues are sorted out, I update all my other sites later.

  2. I actually (accidentally) installed the beta version of 3.0 last month when I set my blog up. I haven’t had any issues and I like the changes they’ve made in the admin area.

I agree, I won’t be upgrading myself or my clients until the next version. I am using 3.0 on several sites and it’s very stable, but stability is not one thing I worry about with WordPress thankfully, but security is.

Oh, and I see they’re saying bulk plugin upgrades is a new thing, but that’s in 2.9.2 as well. It’s a personal thing but I don’t like the new color scheme either, I think 99% of people will never use Custom Post types until some Premium Themes come on board with them, and the menu manager, while works well is complicated in the backend and I don’t like the database changes/updates it makes. however most users won’t care about that, the functionality is very useful.

  4. For this WordPress 3.0, I broke my own rule to always wait before upgrade my blog to latest version. Yes, I upgraded my blog.

    Hey Andrew,
Like you I’m going to hold off on upgrading for a while. There are always a few teething problems and although they are probably minor – I think its better be safe than sorry on this one.

  7. I have upgraded not so long ago (after manually running a backup process – can never be too safe), everything seems fine for the time being. Plug-ins upgraded successfully (that required upgrading), I posted content fine, the theme looks good still and haven’t come across any bugs or such just yet. Of course, I’m touching wood.

  8. I’m like you Andrew, I always wait until the first fix comes out. Now having said that, there are a lot of beta testers that get a kick out of running things before they are released. I used to work at Microsoft and was an alpha tester. (for those that don’t know, and alpha tester is running products not ready for beta testers). I have a lot of good stories on failed products ;-)

Couldn’t agree more. I’m assuming there are all sorts of folks that click the “Upgrade” link, so the rest of us can see what 3.0 has in store for us. 3.1 for me!

  11. I’ve got several blogs that are powered with wordpress.
When the 3.0 was available, I quickly upgrade one of my blog.
(It was a simple blog, with a simple theme and no customization at all).

The automatic upgrade went well, and no bug or any glitches that I am not aware of, can be found. That’s as much as what I did.

Well, I don’t know if there are security flaws that I missed, because I didn’t check it thoroughly.

  12. Andrew, I’m with you.

I’ll hold off for at least a few weeks to be sure any major flaws are fixed, and then I’ll upgrade on just one of my less-important blogs.

    Hi Andrew,

It sounds like a good idea to hold on until any issues or bugs are ironed out.

    Thanks for the heads up!

    Hey, Andrew:

I created several new blogs this week, and my host already has 3.0 as default when one downloads WordPress, so I have it whether I like it or not. lol.

So far, no problems. I am noticing several cool features, but am not liking the fact that plugins now are set up so one can’t see if they have been updated or not. In previous versions, one would click on a plugin and a window would pop up showing information on the plugin, such as author and if it’s compatible with one’s version of Wp. Well, for some ungodly reason, they have removed this useful feature.

Now when one clicks on a WordPress plugin to download it, a small grey window pops up asking to confirm selection, and that’s it.

    Weird!

  16. No, I’m not upgrading yet. I’m still a level behind (shush, don’t tell anyone!). It’s never a good idea to be the guinea pigs when it comes to upgrading, unless you get paid for it. There certainly will be bugs discovered and patches rollled out soon.

Of course, we will have to do it sooner or later in order to have no security holes on our sites.

  17. I’m upgrading my site locally first using WAMP server before I entrust the new release on my production version. Like you said, there are bound to be some minor gotchas that will need to be worked out…possibly even major gotchas. Hopefully not!

  18. Hi Andrew,
I have upgraded my blog and all went fine, thanks God! It’s really faster and nice!

I notice lots of people have problem by upgrading, sad though, as always update to the newest version is always recommended..

  19. HI Andrew – I am a part of the beta testing in WordPress. I have also met a few of the core developers as well. Before any major candidate release, there is a lot of testing.

Though there is always a complaint on how few there are, 3.0 had a great number and I am running it live. Before that, I ran 3.0 beta on my development site.

    You are fine with upgrading.

  20. I’ve been using it on 2 sites since alpha version, and on a 3rd since the beta version. I’ve looked at the source code and have dugg through all the newly added bits of code and followed the bug tracking and updating for months now. Based on all that, I feel confident enough that there aren’t any major bugs if any really at all. I’m not worried about using it on my site, I mean I have been for months now and really all that I can say would be a cause for concern would be certain plugins that need updating, and patching. I don’t use many plugins myself, since I implement my own code as an alternative to many plugins. Gives me more control over the code.

I love 3.0 and can say I see a whole new world of WP sites in the future with it.

  21. Hi Andrew,

I’ve upgraded, and every WP installation I create from hereon are WP3.0.

Mainly, I love the MU! I believe that once people catch on about how to use it to build their community of bloggers, you’ll see a whole new paradigm and a shift away from big sites like Facebook.

    What do you think?

  24. Howard

I upgraded to 3.0 a week ago, and I have seen no problems at all. I have found the folks at WP to be much more reliable about stability than Microsoft. Only thing I’d noticed is that plugin updates seem to happen faster. I’m not sure that it’s due to the upgrade, but I have also noticed that my site traffic has started to increase again (although that may be just because I’ve been a little more consistent about posting over last couple of months)

I’m not 100% happy with the theme that I’m using (a GPL’d version of DesignPile by Site5.com), which has led me to reading up on theme design. As soon as I get some free time, I’ll have a run at creating my own theme.

  25. I think lots of bugs has been fixed during the beta 1 and 2 version. I have upgraded to the latest version and no problem so far.

  26. Harsh Agrawal from Blogging Tips

There are two bugs which I have noticed till now
    1. It converts small “p” in word “WordPress” into Caps “P”. Here is also a solution for the same
    http://www.themepremium.com/wordpress-plugin-to-solve-wordpress-p-problem-in-wordpress-3-0/

    2. If you try to achieve network setting of WordPress 3.0, Google XMl sitemap plugin is not working..since its not compatible with WordPress MU

  27. If there was 1 thing I learned from being a network admin on a Microsoft product network for yrs… backup, backup, backup then do updates. The same is true for installing updates for your website.

Thank goodness I followed that commonsense when WordPress 3.0 came out. It totally destroyed a clients site when I upgraded. I rolled back to the previous version & everything was OK. I don’t know what they did differently but this was the first time the update destroyed everything.

Recently upgraded to WordPress 3.0. Just clicked on automatic upgrade and so far all seems well. Plugins are performing the way they should.
Google XML Site Maps 3.2.4 is supposed to be compatible with WordPress 3.0. I don’t use network, so can’t say if this works.
