Last Friday, I experienced something new.

For one of my sites, www.thedigitalarchives.com for a particular phrase I was targeting, I hit the number one spot in Google.

When I start a new blog or create a new product, I target 6 keywords.

Why six?

That’s what the traffic getting guru, Jeff Johnson recommends. So, I followed suit.

Jeff actually recommends 6 – 8, and I start with 6.

So how do you decide what six keyword phrases you are going to target?

And which one should be your primary keyword? i.e. the keyword that you think is the best out of the six.

This step is crucial and it’s a step I take before deciding on the actual domain name, as sometimes I want my primary keyword phrase within the domain name as well. That helps with Search Engine Optimization (SEO).

When it comes to picking keyword phrases there are three crucial points you have to take into consideration:

1.    Traffic. FACT: 90% of all keyword phrases used have NO traffic. You  must target keyword phrases that people are actually using to perform searches.
2.    Selling. FACT: Many keywords phrases WITH Traffic have little commercial value. The chosen keyword must ‘sell’.

3.    Competition. FACT: Unfortunately, for most bloggers, 90% of most keyword phrases are simply TOO COMPETITIVE to rank page one of Google. So how many other websites are using the same keyword phrase as you?

So what are my guidelines?

You want a keyword phrase that:

1.    Is attracting more than 100 searches per day

2.    Is selling via Adwords

3.    Less than 100,000 other sites are using

You are aiming for:

1.    A high number of searches.

2.    A high number of Adwords sales

3.    A low number of other sites

Get that combination right and you’ve got a great keyword phrase to target.

Remember, your aim is to have 6 – 8.

So I am going to assume you have your niche chosen.

Now watch this video to help you choose the best keyword optimization to get on the first page of Google.

(Note: I got the sums wrong in the video but the process is still the same!)

It makes a lot of sense that keyword phrases are very important because many searches on google are in the form of a phrase
