Hi everyone, how are you doing?

Andrew Rondeau here for webuildyourblog.com.

And today I just wanna show you a quick video on domain names coz giving the domain name right is crucial for your future website and your future blog and the success of that website or blog.

So, what is a domain name?

Well, simply it’s the name of the website.

So, in this particular case, the domain name is www.webuildyourblog.com.

It’s as simple as that.

But there are some do’s and don’ts around domain names.

And, the very first one is, come up with a domain name which says something about your website, says something about your blog because it is so confusing when someone says www.wecookforyou.com and it’s got nothing to do with cooking.

So, whatever you come up with, or whatever your website’s gonna be about, whatever your blog is gonna be about, make sure that the domain name signifies something which your blog covers.

So let’s, as an example, you’re gonna create a new website and it’s gonna give away some travel advice, it’s all about news, it’s all about tips and news and advice. So, you’re gonna want something like www.traveladvice.com.

Now, I can guarantee that that particular domain name won’t be available.

But, you want something like it or you want travel advice or travel news or travel tips within the domain name.

And some people put in hyphens within their domain names and that’s not a problem as long as they don’t add in too many.

So, in my particular case, we hyphen build hyphen your hyphen blog.com would have been a bit silly, would have been a bit stupid.

So, if you are gonna use hyphens keep it to a maximum of two.

And whatever you do, never put in two hyphens one after another.

So, don’t put in like travel hyphen hyphen advice.com. I know that sounds a silly thing for me to say but you’ll be surprised how many people do.

The search engines do not like a huge number of hyphens.

They do not like hyphens one after the other. Your website or blog domain name could actually get banned by the likes of google and yahoo. So don’t use hyphens if you can get away with it.

And if you can get hold of a .com, use .com. Other options are .org, .info, .net, .co.uk obviously if you are in the UK or .eu if you are in the eu.

So wherever you are mostly you can use the local domain  suffix.

But if you can try and get the .com because that’s what most visitors, that’s what most people expect the domain name to be called.

By the way, .info is growing like mad at the moment so lots of people are picking up those .info domain names.

So that might be one that you want to think about if .com isn’t available.

So, as I said go for your domain name which has something to do with your blog and try and use as few other words as possible.

So, if your, if you are good at offering travel advice, don’t use www.hereissomegreattraveladviceforyou.com.

Just use travel advice and whatever you can to go with travel advice.

So be specific as you can.

It helps with your search engine rankings, helps with people finding your site and things like that.

So, travel advice you might be able to get traveladvicenews.com or traveladvicetips.com or freetraveladvice.com. It’s a matter of looking to see what is available.

And what I tend to do is, I use, there’s a website called godaddy.com, and there you can register domain names with them, you can do hosting with them and so on and so forth.

I’ll click on to this site from my site, webuildyourblog.com. You will see that godaddy comes up and then I’m gonna go to their homepage and then what you can then do, you can then put in your first thought of a travel, of a domain name.

So here, I’m gonna put in traveladvice and then go and search to see whether or not that’s available.

Now, I can guarantee that that won’t be available, but I just wanna show you how it tells you.

So, here we are, traveladvice.com is already taken, therefore it’s not available. .co.uk is not available, .net is not available, .info is not available, .org is not available.

So you then have to try an alternative.

So you might wanna try travel-advice, with a hyphen in the middle.

Let’s see what it says this time. So, again it’s already taken. .co.uk, again, .net, .info, .org, they’re all gone. Therefore, the hyphen’s no use in that particular domain name.

But you might be able to have traveladvicenews.com. I put in the .com but you don’t have to.

Let’s see what happens there as a matter of trial and error and see what’s available. So, traveladvicenews.com, oh it’s up there?, traveladvicenews.com is available. .co.uk, .net, .info, .org.

They’re all available for traveladvicenews.com.

So, that’s quite a good domain name there.

And the other thing you can do if I didn’t want traveladvicenews.com is you can go into this area here called smart search. What smart search enables you to do is it gives you alternatives to what you’ve put in.

So, I’ve put in traveladvicenews and then I’m gonna say yes get me coms, .infos, .net, .orgs.

Allow the website to put in popular prefixes, popular suffixes and I will put in dashes as well.

Put in a search and then it will come back and say, these are the sort of things which are available for you. So traveladvicenews.com, .info, .net, .org., what is available. So we got here tripadvicenews.com, vacationadvicenews.com, traveldirectionnews.com, let’s see what else. Easytripadvicenews.com, tripadviceinfo.net.

So that’s the sort of thing you can do with godaddy and get domain name which represents what your blog, what your website is gonna be on. And now there’s one other site which I often use and that’s, let’s spell it right, www.nameboy.com and what nameboy.com does is very similar to what I have just showed you on the smart search on godaddy.

But it just allows you to put in travel as your primary word and you might say news as your secondary word. Tells me if I can allow, if it wants me to allow hyphens or not. Click on the go nameboy go button and what it would do is give you some options or names, domain names which are available.

So, if we scroll down. So you can have newstravel, so you sort them around, Instead os saying travelnews, it’s newstravel. You can have newstravel.net, .org, .info. Mostly it comes up with a pair or doubles, they put the L in. So there’s travel with double L news and as you see all are available.

So it looks all alternatives for you. Travelinfo.org, .info available, travel-info I should say.

What else do we have?

And it expands it as well, so traveller, travelled.

So it says page 1 of 6. So there’s lots of different alternatives to what’s available.

Scroll down, I tend to forget to scroll down. This thing is gonna come up here but scroll down you’ll see them. Travelupdates.com, .net, again, hyphen.

And if you did it, if you did the same search. If I click here and say new search travelnews without the hyphen.

It will then give you the ones where there was no hyphens within the domain name. now, if you can get away with no hyphens, then that’s great.

So newstravel, without the hyphen, travelsinfo, travellednews, travellernews. So this is travelledinfo, travelupdate, travelupdate.info is available according to this.

Again, there’s 5 pages of this. You can look through and see what ones would be appropriate for your blog, for your domain.

So that’s it.

The domain name is what you’re gonna call your blog, what you’re gonna call your website.

You want your primary key phrase within that name.

So if you wanna talk about traveling, you wanna put travelling there in that domain name. You wanna minimize the number of hyphens you use to or you wanna maximize the number of hyphens you use to only two.

And you can use words like free.

So, freetravelnews, freecookingrecipes, that sort of thing.

Always aim for .com, if you ah, if you can get the .com but don’t be too, don’t be worried if you can’t because the .info is good, .net is good, .org is good or in your local country is okay as well.

    The problem I’m having is every good domain I can think of is already taken.

    Don’t really want to include any hyphens, so the available domains are very thin on the ground.

    Most of these domains are not even hosted – what a waste!

    When it comes to naming websites, I only abide with these three simple rules:

    1.Make it unique – Using a similar name of another website owned by someone else is a recipe for disaster. Start by brainstorming at least five names with your friends.
    2.Make it easy to type and remember – Do away with lengthy domain names that are just too hard to remember and pronounce. And, if possible, avoid the letters “q,” “z,” “x,” “c,” and “p”.
    3.Create Expectations – The name should immediately present or at least give people an idea of what the website is all about. Be creative yet direct to the point.

    Hi, some good information in your video, I agree with much of what your advising. I have many domains and I really have more trouble getting good rankings for my .info sites. Google does not seem to like them so much. I have much better success with .com, .org and .net domains. You can always use your desired keywords first and just add an additional short word at the end like tips or info etc.

    Here is also some advise when searching for a domain name.
    Go to: www dot pcnames dot com

    This site will quickly show the domain availability. I sometime spend hours searching for a good domain name. This site saves me much time. It gives a real-time update on domain availability.

    Nice video, gotta admit I agree with you on just about everything. Have had some problems in the past getting the domains I want, but hyphens can work wonders. Furthermore, I had no idea I could use my main phrase and just add another short word(tips/info) in the end, I really thought I had to have the key phrase and nothing else..

    Guess I`ll sleep well tonight, keeping in the back of my head that I actually learned something today. Haha.

    When I buy a domain name I often try to include my number 1 target keyword in the domain name where possible. Ive found that this helps a lot with getting top Search Engine rankings…I sometimes try to get an aged domain if Im building a website in a very competitive niche…

      That is a good approach – having the primary keyword in the domain name.

      I have purchased a couple of aged domian names but 9 time out of 10, I always start from scratch.

    I think you’re right about beign an expert rather than “jack of all trades” Andrew. When I started out I tried to do everything myself and while I did learn a lot, I didnt make much money. Since Ive become much more focused in what I do my earnings have increased a lot. Another thing which I used to do a lot of was try to do things “perfectly” – Ive since found that I make much more progress if Im not too worried about the little details – everything doesn’t need to be 100% perfect for it to work!

      Your ‘previous’ sounds similar to mine. I’ve tried lots of different things – lots of blogs in different niches.

      Re: perfection. I think it’s a fear thing. Some people want perfection because they are concerned over what people will think and say if it isn’t. The quicker one gets over that fear the better…but it still has to be of a high quality.

    When taking your website name into account, one thing to consider is the seo side with reference to your keywords. If your keywords aren’t part of your website title then you’ll need to build greater emphasis into your link building and any other type of seo campaign.

    I think that website names should be catchy, easy to remember and relevant to what the site is about. Although made-up words will become familiar to those readers who visit often, they are totally undescriptive to new visitors who will want to quickly and easily find out whether what they need is there.     Can I just ask Essay Writer why one shouldn’t use the letters “q,” “z,” “x,” “c,” and “p”? There are many popular sites which use these and I’m not sure why you would want to avoid them. Surely PayPal haven’t suffered from having the letter P in their name.

    I know “rage” is sometimes seen as a negative emotion, but I wanted to let people know that I’m willing to go further than others when it comes to creating websites.

    If I’m setting up a website that I hope to develop and build over time for long term profits I always go with a dot com. If however I am targeting a current trend or seasonal niche I find that if a dot com isn’t available, then a dot net or a dot org work equally as well. I agree with some of the other comments, especially about getting a domain name which includes your target keyword phrase.

    Very timely advice for me, thanks Andrew, see my post below. I’m spoilt for choice with options form all the suggestions I’ve had! I have a few questions on this stuff for everyone if you don’t mind.

    1. In the vid you talk about using hyphens and also alts to .com or c.o.uk etc. Is it better to have the ideal name and sacrifice the .com or would you go for yr second choice if it has a .com avail when yr ideal one has only .biz or .info? I’d read somewhere that some extensions are more favoured by spammy sites.

    2. Shorter is better as you say, is there an optimum rule about this, 2 words or 3 syallables maybe?

    3. Finally, just because a domain is avail does it mean you have complete ownership? For example, my blog is inspired by the popular train info site, the manin seat 61, http://www.seat61.com, so if i went and called mine the man in seat62 (I wouldn’t be that cheeky or unoriginal btw!) might I run into legal problems even the domain was avail and i bought it up? I spose what I’m asking is what should you do to check that you’re not unwittingly infringing someone else’s copyright before buying a domain?

      Re: Question 1.

      I would look to see how ‘good’ the .com is first. It is a proper, reputable site.

      If it is, I would go for an alternative name.

      If just registered, then a .biz is what I would go for.

      2.It has to be said and understood easily. Pretend you are on the radio – if you said the domain name would people remember it…would people know how to spell it?

      3. Tough question because each company has their own copyright. I would ask the company / website.

    This is the order I use for picking up domains. First I try with main keyword and .com tld (ex. mainkeyword.com). If that is taken, then I try main keyword in plural (mainkeywords.com). If that is taken, then I try same with .net and .org. If even that is taken, then I try with just one hyphen (main-keyword.com). I never buy domain with more then one hyphen. If all this domains are taken, then I try to find subfix that makes sense.

    I have a couple of sites with two hyphens and these have worked fine so far. I thought that it was better to have a .com with hyphens than one of the other extensions without (the above has made me wonder about this!).

    The disadvantage I have seen is when you have tell someone what your domain name is but on the other hand when you see the name on the search results it is easier to read with the hyphens (maybe I am just trying to convince myself?).

    Hey Andrew, I totally agree with you about the ‘please put something in your domain related to your blog’. The number of times I’ve found a blog title that sounded interesting to find it had nothing to do with it’s domain has become frustrating for me. I find that even if you can only get one word in there, so if it’s about ‘travel’ you go with MyBigTravelBlog.com you can get noticed by an interested audience and the search engines. Using this strategy I regularly buy domains with one relevant word and a few randoms from used domain sites and some of these domains have a good history, PR and the rest.

    If you are planing service or social sites, then you need good brand name. But if you are planing a niche site, then best domain would be exact keyword domain (main keyword). Luckily, Google made it possible for .co domains rank as good as .net, .org and .com. So many good .co domains available out there. Another good way to get good domain is to search for expired domain names, which often have age factor and many backlinks.

    Cool video, I think the biggest key with buying a domain is to make sure you have at least one of your primary keywords worked into it, especially if you are small and just starting out. If you are a plumber, make sure the term “plumber” or “plumbing” is part of your URL, as an example. It can’t hurt!

Here it is not possible to use whole keyword in domain. Will it informative domain if I use simply short form of homeopathy health clinic as hhclinic(.)com ?

    Andrew is definitely right, having the keywords in your domain is something that will make your SEO efforts go a lot farther in the short run. If you have two sites aiming for the same keywords and you do solid link building, chance are in the short run that the one with the keywords in the domain will do better then the one without keywords in the domain (or excessive hyphens and Andrew has stated). Over a year or so, with enough link building efforts, chances are the keywords in domain will have less significant in the SERPs. This is of course from my experience, I’d like to hear what other people think.

    SEO work on your future blog can be minimized signifficantly if you select the right name for a website. In these regards, I would recommend to register a domain that includes the main keywrod. Sometimes it makes sense to purchase a ready domain name.

    Good points here,

    I found that adding an extra word to your URL doesn’t effect the SEO that much, as long as the key words are there, and in the H1 tag.

    I don’t use hyphens cuz I don’t see too many hyphenated URL on the top of the seeps.

    I generally search for the keywords in Google Adwords keyword tool to see some traffic stats and then decide on the domain name. I did not try my luck with registering good domain names that’s been dropped recently. They do come with risks though (Things like google ban, bad backlinks, etc)

    Great article Andrew. I think naming your blog is harder than naming your own child! There more factors in choosing the name. This definitely helps to make it a smooth decision. Just like Rich Jerk- I don’t like hyphens because I think they can create confusion. I still get underscore and hyphens mixed up.

    I have read couple of times that the website name should include a word or two of what is it about..and a name that should not be hard to remember,cos unless the visitor bookmark your site, they’ll find a hard time going back to it again…and there’s just too many site that people go on checking out,I don’t think they’ll find time to even check their history.

    LOL, I like it that sample about domain name, wecookforyou.com….and it’s not even anything about cooking!But you know what, sometimes it’s really hard to think of the right domain name, sometimes I feel that if I choose the ordinary, it seems so over used..but I guess that’s what we really want it to be…that is why people use dashes and underscore and so on…well, at least that’s what i thought. I may be wrong of course..it would be nice if anyone can tell me I’m right (or wrong)..

      I would do my best to not use hypens. You do have to be creative in your domain names these days.

      Imagine you are on the radio and you had the chance to give out your domain name. The last thing you want to do is have to spell it and mention a load of hypens.

But could you give me an advice what domain extension would be the best? .com or .me? .Com is a very famous domain extension but I guess almost domain name I am trying to give it to mine are already registered. .Me is good for personal websites but I don’t see .me domains on SERPs. Only those common extensions which in SERPs. What do ya think?

    This is great stuff Andrew. I wrote about this recently as part of a “mistakes bloggers make” post. It’s sad how often people choose a trendy or funny name, only to realize later it has little to no SEO value and they didn’t want to brand it in the first place :)

    Something else on the use of hyphens in a domain.

    Mobile browsers are often using a phone and the hyphen is not an easily accessible symbol so it makes typing it in o a mobile device tricky.

    Too many hyphens could be a shot in the foot for mobile traffic before you get started.

    Good article. A simple trick I use when I want a domain really bad and it’s not available (and I think it’s a must to have those words in my domain name) is using prefixes and suffixes.

    You mentioned using “free” as a prefix, but there are a lot of words you can put before or after the desired domain name to get an available new one.

    For example you can use: top,best,free,cool, etc.

    Naming a website is like naming your baby.. You want it to be cool and at the same time pronounceable and easy to remember and spell out. I recently had a hard time choosing one for my blog and settled with a pronounceable and easily spelled 6 letter domain! Thank you for these tips :)

    Appreciate the tips on choosing a domain name, Andrew. I agree that .com is still the best in terms of recall and universal appeal. I know how discouraging the process of deciding on a domain name can be since pretty much every brilliant idea already has .com attached to it.     It seams that Google will eventually tackle EMD (exact match domain) websites. Branding is always good for strong position so I rather choose unique name opposite to keyword rich one.

    What do you think of including “the” within a domain name. How do you know when this is appropriate? For instance, “thejournal.com” is a site, which uses the word “the” in the domain. But when is it a bad idea? Does the word “the” mess up SEO or cause other issues? Thanks. I wonder about this one a lot.

    Although this is what everyone tells us, I do wonder if it is the most important thing to worry about. It does depend on whether you are more interested in creating a memorable brand-name than SEO. Companies like Google, Amazon, Bing, Yahoo, Adobe, YouTube, Facebook, eBay, Twitter, none of the big names use keyworded domain names, so maybe there is an argument that creating a brand is more important than relying solely on search. Of cause, you need to be doing something pretty unique and special, as well…

    Please ignore the hyphens while it not strongly recommended.
    Mostly people use it to separate the keywords. But no one will remember the hyphens when look for you.
    Short, Simple, Descriptive and easy to remember will be the best.
