About 2 years ago, while using my previous PC, Internet Explorer suddenly stopped working.

I tried so many things to resolve this and nothing did, so I started using Firefox and have never looked back … until a few days ago!

I maintain a number of my own and client’s blogs using Wordpress.

A couple of days ago, whenever I tried to add an image to a blog posting using the Wordpress Image Uploader, Firefox just crashed.

I tried again. Same thing happened.

I re-booted the Pc and tried again. Same thing happened.

I tried in IE (with my latest PC) and it worked fine. No probs.

So I was now optimistic and tried again using Firefox. CRASH!

I found the problem – it’s the Google Gears add-on for Firefox.

I simply disabled Google Gears and now everything is working just fine.

While in Firefox, simply go to:

Tools > Add-ONs, select Gears and ‘Disable’ it.

I don’t know why the problem is occurring but there is some conflict between Wordpress, Firefox and the Google Gear add-on.

Just thought I’d let you know!

I also use firefox as my main browser but for posting on my blog I use IE because I have less problems with formatting and firefox always wants to leave some unnecessary, visible HTML code. I think part of the problem comes from using the visual editor instead of the HTML editor.

So,yes, as I’ve found online in various places, disabling Google Gears stops the crashing problem. But for me, it also takes away the nice Edit Photo tool that popped up when you click on a photo in the visual editor (I use it to size down the full-size photo to the 640 pixel width my blog will display so that the full-size will still display once someone clicks on a photo). Anyway, I suppose I could figure out how to do what I need to in the HTML editor, but that seems like a waste of my time. I just want to work on my photos, not the code behind the page. Ah well, we’ll see how it all works out.

Instead of disabling Gears, you can install the IE Tab add-on and edit WP in an IE tab within Firefox. That way, you get the best of all worlds. (Firefox, Gears and IE in that one Firefox tab).
