There are differing opinions regarding the use and importance of Alexa ranking. Some say that it’s useless, others say it is important.
There are many pros and cons.
Back in February when my blog was one year old my Alexa ranking was 52,753.
Today it is 41,997.
I like to monitor my ranking as it is an indication of the amount of traffic your site is getting.
So, for those who still consider Alexa, here are some helpful articles from big and small bloggers alike who share their ideas about Alexa rankings and how to increase it.

As I understand it, Alexa rank comes only from users of the Alexa toolbar. It can be a good indicator of traffic, but I have several blogs. One gets five times as much traffic as the next highest-traffic blog, yet has a similar Alexa rank.

That’s right John – as I say it is only an indication. Irrespective of the actual number, as long at the ranking steadily decreases then you know you are getting more Alexa traffic.

Useful list Andrew. I do think Alexa is important but I am not sure whether I would focus that much on increasing my rank. I think if you focus on building relationships and creating content then your alexa rank will naturally increase.

That is true – relationships are key.
Just thought some people would like to try – I added the Alexa Ranking ‘box’ on my site as per Yaro’s suggestion just to see if it does make any difference.

Great tips thanks so much Andrew. I haven’t really looked much into Alexa Rankings…I know it is a good indicator and all. Just focused more on Google Analytics, traffic sources, etc. What is the biggest thing you get out of Alexa? Congrats on moving up to PR4 in the last update by the way!

The only thing I get from Alexa is the indication that ‘traffic’ is going in the right direction.
Thanks for the ‘thanks’ re: PR4.

Sometimes it’s really complicated for us to improve the Alexa Ranking as it counts only people who installed the Alexa toolbar, sometimes our blog traffic is huge, but the Alexa ranking is remained the same. What we can do is just driving more traffic to the site, and just let the Alexa ranking grows itself.
I’ve tried several tips to improve my Alexa Ranking, it improved until 40k+ and it drops to 50k+ right now, but honestly my blog traffic drops a bit due to less updating as I’m busy with my examination right now.
Anyway, good sharing Andrew with all the useful link!

Lee

Lee,
You are right, Alexa ranking is not that important – it’s just one of the many stats that are available.

Thanks for gathering all of these resources together. I don’t think Alexa is that important but I think that the better our rank is, the less important we think it is

Nice, Andrew!
I have been working on lowering my Alexa rank with the assistance of some of the tools you mention in the backlinks post.
Ultimately, I’m working on my google rank… but Alexa gives me something easier to feel good about as I walk the long road to page 1 in google.
I’m curious… do you do anything to ping or update when you use backlink tools so that you get the ‘credit’ for them immediately?
keep smiling,
Ben

Ben,
I do a few things. Based upon my blog post: http://www.webuildyourblog.com/2121/build-backlinks-11-methods/
After my comment has been approved on a blog site, I always tweet and social bookmark the blog post. I don’t get any real benefit other than someone might see my comment and visit my site.
Re: Article Directories. Again, you can tweet and social bookmark whenever you add an article to an article directory.
I also add my article directory accounts RSS feeds to the RSS directories. That way they get a link back as well.
Same thing with HubPages – get then tweeted and social bookmarker – get a few blogger friends to help out as well.
Does that help?

All great suggestions. Another method of improving Alexa rank is to write about the topics that people are searching Alexa for. If you have the Alexa toolbar installed then you will see current trends (similar to Google trends) if any of these fit your niche, write about them asap so that you can attract Alexa toolbar users to your site.
