backlinks Get Backlinks – Here are the 11 methods and backlink tools I useMy blog has 7670 backlinks as stated in my blog post Blogging Guide Blog Is One Year Old and since then I’ve had a number of personal emails asking me how I get backlinks.

By the way, today the number of backlinks is 7790.

In this post I share 11 methods I use but first…what is a backlink:

Simply put, a backlink is a link on a website (including blogs) that leads back to your website / blog.

In search engine optimization (SEO), page rank is at least partially determined by the number of sites that link to yours. It’s important to gain backlinks honestly, and if a lot of other sites link back to you, you will naturally get more traffic to your page.

There is a lot of argument around the quality of backlinks.

We are to believe that a backlink from a website that is in the same niche as yours carries more weight. That would make sense.

Also, we are to believe the higher the Page Rank of the website you are getting backlinks also carries more weight.

So, ideally we want backlinks from websites in our niche and with a Page Rank of 10!

There are not many of those around unfortunately.

My approach is to mix it up and not get too hung up about whether the backlinks are in my niche or coming from very high Page Rank websites. Personally, I have too many other aspects of my on-line business that I want to keep running.

One more thing to mention…

When back-linking try and use the anchor text of your targeted keyword phrase. Read my post on anchor text here: How to use anchor text to your advantage

1. Blog Commenting

An easy way to get backlinks is to target Blogs that ‘Do-Follow’.  If you want to follow do-follow blogs (i.e. the ones that provide you with a backlink), here’s a great list: http://followlist.com/

When you comment try and include your name AND your anchor text. Something like: Terry @ Tips for horse lovers

In this example the anchor text is “Tips for horse lovers”.

Aim to make 10 valuable comments per day.

2. Article Directories

Submitting your articles is a straightforward process.

You simply copy your blog post, add a bio with a link or two back to your site in the resource box. Then you submit these articles to article directories.

Some popular Article Directories for you to try out are:

http://www.ezinearticles.com

http://thewhir.com

http://www.goarticles.com

http://www.buzzle.com

http://articlealley.com

http://www.searchwarp.com

http://www.ehow.com

You can just copy and paste your blog articles – you will still get a backlink but if you want to improve your overall SEO and traffic you may wish to use a tool I recently came across and now use: The Best Spinner

The Best Spinner creates unique articles for you to publish on the article directories.

And ArticleBot automatically submits your articles (spun or not) to over 400 different Article Directories.

3. RSS Directories

I mention this technique over and over again but there are so many people who just don’t use it and it is one of the easiest ways to get automatic backlinks.

Check out this post and submit your blog feed (and others) to the RSS Directories:

How you make your blog index quicker, build back-links and increase your traffic with a task that takes 2 minutes and you only have to do it once

4. Web Directories

Only a couple of years ago, submitting your blog to the web directories was a must. Nowadays, Google, it is believed, doesn’t put so much importance on the free Web Directory listings.

However, I still do submit the sites to the Free Web Directories. As far as I am concerned, the effort it takes is quite minimal, it only has to be completed once and you still get more backlinks and some of them are high Page Ranking.

So I recommend you submit your domain to various Web Directories.

Please note: there can be a waiting period involved, sometimes as much as a few months.

Again, I use tools and services rather than manually carry out myself.

I can recommend DirectoryBot and Directory Maximizer.

5. Social Bookmarking

Most of the very popular social bookmarking sites like Digg, StumbleUpon and Reddit do not give you a backlink when you social bookmark your blog post.

However there are some that do! Sites like:

http://www.mister-wong.com/

http://www.spurl.net/

http://www.diigo.com/

I use the tool Bookmarking Demon to submit my blog posts to several of the social bookmarking sites automatically.

6. Web 2.0 Sites

Write a unique blog post and create a hub page using Squidoo or HubPages. These sites provide excellent backlinks.

Read my guest post What is a Hub-Page and Why Should You Make One? to find out more.

7. Video Sites

These days having some video blog posts is a must and once created you can submit them to numerous video sites automatically by using TubeMogul.

8. Angela’s Backlinks

Angela’s Backlinks provides you with a monthly report of 30 High Page Rank sites, using screenshots so that you can copy and have backlinks in place linking back to your site within minutes.

And the price for such a report?

$5 a month!

Here’s the link for more information: Angela’s Backlinks

9. Forums

By joining a forum and adding a signature – each time you add a forum post, you can get a backlink (depending upon the forum).

Forums are regularly indexed by search engines, and by joining and adding a signature in your profile, it is another way to get some good backlinks with your desired anchor text. If the forum is a popular one, a backlink can be extremely valuable.

In a lot of cases however, administrators don’t allow links in forums posts.  Some administrators even prohibit the search engines from indexing their content.

10. Guest Posting

Guest posting is not just about getting the backlink. It is much more than that. Read my post on Guest Blogging.

11. Internal Links

Internal links from one blog post to another blog post on your site also count as backlinks.

Each time you write a blog post, try and backlink to a previous post. That way you are also adding another backlink. Plus you are enticing your visitors to see some of your other previous posts.

Powerful tip:

What is an automatic way of linking to other blog posts?

Use the MaxBlogPress Ninja Affiliate Plugin.

Not only does it link to affiliate products, you can set up certain keywords to link to your previous posts…and when you first install it…it adds links to all your previous blog posts as well. Instantly you could get a few hundred backlinks. The number depends upon how many published blog posts you have and how many ‘backlinks’ you ask the plugin to add per blog post. I have a maximum of only 2, otherwise it can become spammy looking.

I know I have mentioned numerous ways to build backlinks but by carrying out these tasks you will also gain loads more traffic.

The Tools

One more thing to mention before I finish…within this post I list many of the tools I use each day to help me build backlinks and traffic. If you were to do several of the tasks mentioned by hand (i.e. manually), you would be spending all day just doing the tasks and have no time for anything else…like writing great content and building relationships.

So for me, the tools below are worth investing in and most are one-off payments:

The Best Spinner: simply creates unique articles for you to publish on the article directories

ArticleBot: automatically submits your articles (spun or not) to over 400 different Article Directories.

RSSBot: Submits your blog feeds (and Twitter, article directories, Facebook…) to over 30 RSS directories – meaning publish a blog post and get 30 backlinks instantly!)

DirectoryBot and Directory Maximizer: Submit your blog domain to hundreds of Article directories.

Bookmarking Demon: Submit your blog posts to Do-Follow social bookmarking sites automatically.

Angela’s Back-links provides you with a monthly report of 30 High Page Rank sites, using screenshots so that you can copy and have backlinks in place linking back to your site within minutes.

MaxBlogPress Ninja Affiliate Plugin:  Automatically set-up internal backlinks to your previous posts in an instant.

The links to the tools I use and recommend in this post are affiliate links so if you decide to go ahead and purchase, I will earn some commission.

How do you get backlinks? What tools or methods do you use? Share your views in the comments below.

Andrew — thanks for the list. I use a few that you have mentioned above and I have tried Best Spinner as well. It certainly does speed things up when creating unique articles for the directories.

Not sure I’ll be checking into Angela’s links. I looked into that a couple years ago and just wasn’t impressed with the information being provided. With SEO Book toolbar it’s easy enough for me to see the PR of a page, but I’m not too picky about the PR or niches. I just rather read what I like and leave comments on the blogs I follow. I just need to weed out the blogs I follow to a managable amount.

Hi Andrew,
I found you through a guest post over at smallbizbee, You give a lot of good information here. Most people would not share how they get backlinks. I like the RSS Directories idea the best.

Having a program that automates the process is a no brainier. One of the challenges is sometimes you just can’t get all of the backlinking done that you would like because of time and the effort that it takes.Auto software can help.

One question, I know that article directories like Ezine will allow you to submit your blog post as an article, however, will Google not count the link because of duplicate content? The other issue is that the site you submit your article to can out rank you on Google.I tested this out one time. I submitted an article to a high PR site and Goggle gave the site position over my page.

Thanks again Andrew,I will be following your blog and it was all because of a guest post, more testimony that what you have to say works.

Thanks Rob

[Reply]

Andrew Rondeau Reply:

Rob,

The RSS tactic is a good one because you only have to do it once and from then on, backlinks grow every time you add a blog post.

Adding the same content to other ezines is a Google duplicate content myth!

You are not penalized by adding the same content to the ezines – I have been doing that for a long time and you still get the backlink. It is better, however, if you were to add a unique or ’spun’ version of the content to the ezines – by doing this it would overcome the second issue you raise: “I submitted an article to a high PR site and Goggle gave the site position over my page.”

The best spinner software is pretty neat. It takes about 30 minutes to get loads of ‘alternative’ versions. If you are lokking for a spinner – try it out for seven days for $7. Then if you don’t like it…cancel.

I don’t like to push the buttons of those algorithms. I never post duplicate content, though most of my articles are linking to other people, advertising what I do, or recommending someone/something else. So in the end, I’m always “spinning” the post prior to submission.

I think this is a cleaner way to go and puts out more quality articles for your backlinks. Unique Article Writing is another good product to try. They don’t have a trial version (though if you cancel within the first 30 days you get a full refund) and it costs $67 a month. However, not only does it create unique articles for you, but it will place them in article directories too. And I was told (no I haven’t had time to try this yet) that it will drip them into the directories over a period of time.

You listed some good techniques here and I use some of them too. But one thing I’m confused about is the Ninja Affiliate plugin. You said that it creates backlinks, but really doesn’t it just create links to other sites? That doesn’t have any benefit for your blog – yes it creates backlinks but they’re for other sites. Am I missing something?

[Reply]

Andrew Rondeau Reply:

Josh,

What you can do with the Ninja Affiliate plugin is automatically link to other blog posts on your site for certain keywords – and that creates internal back links.

Foe instance, if I write blog post A about ‘time management’ and then in blog post B I use the phrase ‘time management’ – I can automatically set-up in the Ninja Affiliate plugin that the phrase ‘time management’ becomes a link and links to blog post A.

I hope that makes sense!

Nice article here. I believe that possible the best way is to comment on other blogs. The only downside, if you can call it that is that a lot of blogs have the nofollow tag in place. Which means that although you get the back link, no PR juice is passed by Google.
I am a bit weary of auto-bots, they can get out of hand, you have no idea as to where they’re posting. They might post your artile on a site which can actually do more harm than good.

Good article which I bookmarked right away. One thing I don’t think anyone has mentioned is Press Releases. I use them a lot and they seem to be very powerful in search engine terms. I try to make the content interesting in its own right, current and non commercial with a good photo if poss. I only put one or two links on to my own site or articles and then one or two to high rank sites like the BBC for credibility. My favourite sites for this purpose are PRLog.org and pressreleasepoint.com.

Personally, I don’t think forum links or blog comment links carry much weight anymore with Google, I have run some individual tests on this myself.

For some reason, I didn’t see the part in your article explaining that writing content people will want to link to “naturally” will get you a much better link than any of these methods other than maybe guest posting.

I am still a believer in content generated links, and spending too much time trying to “game” the system by spinning articles and submitting a bunch of directory and forum posts could be spent much better building a community on your own site.

I am a huge fan of blog commenting, but as I stated earlier, the links are not very helpful for SEO, but are great for promotion/marketing, especially if you are a consistent and great commentor.

I have performed tests on several sites where I only got links from blog comments and forums, thousands of them. While they certainly helped to get my site indexed more if the links came from higher PR pages, they didn’t appear to do anything for SEO. Then after only a few “natural links” (in content, anchor texted links) there was a HUGE burst in SERP’s for my keywords.

I have also heard Matt Cutts describe comment links as something other people can do to actually harm your site by getting links pointing to you from bad neighborhoods. He specifically said that comment links have less weight because of that fact.

Plus the fact that if you look at why links are counted as “votes”, how could a forum sig link or a comment be considered a “vote”. That is why I think Google tries to put more weight on links within content, it actually is a “vote”.

Of course, I am no expert, just my thoughts….

Yes it is very simple. It would take a minute or so to find a few hundred of them. Though it would take some time to go through them to see which were successful and which failed.

But Angela has built a successful IM business for herself and I’d rather not attempt to destroy what she has worked hard to achieve.

But one technique would be to just take the url of any content she publishes on her site, ezine articles etc. and enter them into “yahoo site explorer” it will show all the indexed pages she used to create backlinks to the page you chose.

That method will work with any web page not just the ones angela creates.

This one has over 2000 indexed links http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/search?p=http://angelasdiscountmarket.com/angela.html&fr=sfp&bwm=i

Hey Andrew, Based on my own experience, one of the best ways i build my back links is through forums, for example i would go to Google and search for ”forums” and from there i try to find as many High PR forums where i can leave my link as my signature. Another great technique i use is a website call link building diagnosis what this site do is show you all the back links that a particular website has
so with that said i would search for a bunch of high pr sites and Analyze their back links, this website even shows you how strong the link is visit http://www.linkdiagnosis.com/ i really hoped this post was useful to you Andrew, Thank you.

Good effort again! I think if any blogger just work honestly on any two mentioned strategies like Commenting on blog and Article directories, then hopefully he will get high PR backlinks soon. Personally I find blog commenting as the best method because it not only gives you backlinks but socialize you in the blogging world aswell :) .

well its great to have lot of blog commenting its builds your network if you do regular and quality comments in tons of blog. Whereas I don’t have much idea about automated submission but are they reliable. will the admistrator or sites will not ban you if find as bot. Also angela’s backlinks are really worth to go for but not sure which type of backlinks we will get. either they are related to my industry and quality or just general for all.

Current use of blogs for ideas to build backlinks is widespread in the Internet world of information, my hobbies are reading other people’s blogs helps me learn, additional knowledge from the article. So I think blog comments are a easy job for people like my hobby. but I think that search engines can not look favorable to your site if you misuse some or most of the techniques, so that must be used appropriately. I hope that the methods that you actually share it will be useful to readers, thank you very much for everything.
