Do NOT upgrade to WordPress 2.9 yet…

wordpress 2.9You may have seen a number of blog posts saying WordPress 2.9 has arrived. It’s true it has. The WordPress team have included some extra facilities like:

  1. Global undo/”trash” feature, which means that if you accidentally delete a post or comment you can bring it back from the grave (i.e., the Trash). This also eliminates those annoying “are you sure” messages we used to have on every delete.
  2. Built-in image editor allows you to crop, edit, rotate, flip, and scale your images to show them who’s boss.
  3. Batch plugin update and compatibility checking, which means you can update 10 plugins at once, versus having to do multiple clicks for each one, and they’re using the new compatibility data from the plugins directory to give you a better idea of whether your plugins are compatible with new releases of WordPress. This should take the fear and hassle out of upgrading.
  4. Easier video embeds that allow you to just paste a URL on its own line and have it magically turn it into the proper embed code, with Oembed support for YouTube, Daily Motion, Blip.tv, Flickr, Hulu, Viddler, Qik, Revision3, Scribd, Google Video, Photobucket, PollDaddy, and WordPress.tv.

All cool functions to make us more effective and efficient but don’t upgrade yet because there will be bugs in this version and upgrades will be coming out very soon.

Wait until WordPress 2.9.1 or even 2.9.2 and then upgrade. That’s what I’m going to do.

  1. Sorry Andrew, but I have to disagree on the waiting for 2.9.1/2 to come out. With 2.8 there were a bunch of problems, with various plugins for example, and 2.8.1 came rather quickly. But there’s only been a handful of 2.9 problems reported at the WordPress.org forums, and most of those have related to something else than WP itself.

Of course, there’s nothing wrong with waiting, as the latest 2.8.x was secure and stable release, but with the new features and themes+plugins being updated to 2.9, I didn’t wait (this time). As a sidenote, if you don’t upgrade to 2.9 yet, do not upgrade plugins either, that might break something on the 2.8.x version as the changes are likely to be for 2.9.

    • Antti,

It’s just my preference. The next version normally comes out pretty quick so I’d rather wait. Excellent point about plugins – didn’t think about that.

  2. I am also in my waiting mode. I will wait for 2.9.1 at leas to install it.

  3. Same here Andrew, I am also waiting for a more newer release. I have been for a long time involved in SW development. It is far better, to wait for other people to weed out the bugs than do it yourself and possibly crash your DB etc.

If it aint broke, then don’t fix it :)

  4. Upgraded, i think some problems. :(

  5. Hi Andrew, Thanks for your update news. WordPress 2.9 has few more extra features which will help to more accessible. But one problem is that some feature doesn’t work properly.

I’m little bit confuse why they released 2.9 even the current version wordpress 2.8.4 is running well and stable.

    • Chris,

2.9 just has many more functions. You say you are on 2.8.4. That isn’t the latest stable version. 2.8.6 is and it is worth upgrading to as there are security issues with 2.8.4 and 2.8.5.

      Andrew

  6. I planned to upgrade before, but it seemed that a lot of people have trouble after they upgraded to wordpress 2.9.So I decide to wait.

  7. Upgraded without any problem, all plug-ins working super fine…

I upgraded already and got scheduling feature does not work very well even dead, how can i resolve this?

Interesting view, but I’ve already upgraded yesterday.

The reason for this was simple:

I was still running on 2.7, and I’d never really thought about upgrading. However, a few days ago I was reading around and realised how vunerable I was to hackers when still using an old version. Plus, I knew that traffic would be lower over Christmas, so if anything detrimental did happen when I upgraded, I’d be able to deal with it before my trafic (hopefully) rises in January! :)

  10. honestly, i still not update my wordpress. So, no need to worry. Just fine with my current update.

  11. I always wait until they get to a point something in versions, because it has to be out a while before someone can find something that will break. I never like being that someone.

  12. LOL ya don’t need to remind me; I’m running nicely on 2.7.1 as it is.

    3.0 anyone?

  13. I upgraded already and I guess I will have to wait for 2.9.1 to come out which I think will be very soon. I hope that this is the last fix for 2009.

  14. I upgraded as quickly as possible. And so far there has been no problem.

  15. I have updates two of my sites and got no problem so far.

  16. Ooops, I upgraded already! Thankfully, I have only had one problem. My Greetbox stopped working with the upgrade. Can’t wait til that’s fixed!

  17. I upgraded my wordpress recently and I found few bugs like when I make a new post, it gives me a 404 error page, but then I figured out the issue. I think the latest 2.9. was little bug free.

There will ALWAYS be bugs in the wordpress software and dat’s why I’m not too paranoid about updating each time an update comes out. Besides with my database backed up and an old version of wordpress @ hand, I can easily revert back should the new version mess things up ;)

Yeah but what a hassle and lot of wasted effort – just wait a couple of weeks and the less “buggy” version will be out – which in the case of 2.9.1 is was.
